Propelled by Carr’s `buzzer-beating 3, a shot that looked eerily reminiscent to the one Northern Iowa hit to stun Texas in 2016, the Longhorns beat the Hokies 81-73 to advance to the second round fo
r the first time since 2014. Texas will face No. 3 seed Purdue on Sunday.
“It was kind of a momentum play being able to hit that shot going into the half,” Carr said afterwards. “Me and coach kind of locked eyes, he told me two dribbles. We always count the dribbles whenever there's a certain amount of time left, and I let it go with confidence. That's a shot, I'm not going to lie, I do practice a lot. Anybody who knows me knows I do practice that shot a lot. I wasn't really surprised when it went in. I'm happy it did.
“He was able to get two dribbles to get a pretty high-percentage shot,” said Beard, who improved to 5-0 in the first round as a head coach. “It's not a 50 percent shot, but for Marcus that might be a 20 percent shot. He can make one out of five from that area.” Carr’s bomb and subsequent second-half outburst helped end the program’s four-game losing streak in the NCAA tournament’s first round. It felt like, finally, some long-awaited cosmic counterbalancing after what happened against Butler in 2015 and Northern Iowa in 2016 and Nevada in 2018 and Abilene Christian last year.
“You know, we don't want him to roll it and scoop it up at midcourt and get that shot,” Virginia Tech coach Mike Young said. “Kid made a three-quarter court shot, give me a break. But that is a momentum play. They had the ball to start the second half, I think they got something down there. So those are – those can swing some things, all right? Did it beat us? No, but it was a momentum for the Longhorns going into the half.”: Butler 56, Texas 48. Texas trailed 44-43 with 2:42 to go.
