The Texas House on Tuesday tentatively passed a bill that repeals the state sales tax on diapers, period products, baby wipes and other similar materials.

1:22 PM on Mar 28, 2023 CDT, by Austin Democratic Rep. Donna Howard, now awaits a final vote on the House floor before it can head to the Senate. The bill has bipartisan supportThe bill removes the 6¼-cent sales tax from a number of products, which supporters said would help low-income families.

“Removing the sales tax on diapers will help ensure that parents have access to an adequate supply of clean diapers, which can help improve the health and well-being of children and their caregivers,” McDaniel said in a written statement. The bill isn’t only limited to diapers and period products. It also would exempt maternity clothing and breast pump products, which can cost families and individuals hundreds of dollars, even before sales tax is factored in.On the House floor, Howard said a family purchasing a month’s worth of diapers and baby wipes, a week’s worth of menstrual pads, a few nursing bras, maternity clothes and a breast pump could spend $350 before taxes. Sales tax adds an additional $28.72.
