Rep. Bryan Slaton, R-Royse City, looks on in the House Chamber at the Capitol, in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 18, 2023. On Saturday, May 6, a Texas legislative committee recommended that Slaton be expelled for inappropriate sexual conduct with a 19-year-old intern. The Texas House voted unanimously Tuesday to expel state Rep. Bryan Slaton after an internal investigation found the North Texas Republican had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 19-year-old legislative aide.
The investigative report detailed how Slaton, who is married, had grown close to the aide and invited her to his condo one night, offering her and other Capitol staffers alcohol. Whistleblowers who were interviewed said he had sex with her that night, then later pressured her and other staffers to stay quiet about the incident.
After the vote, Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan said he supported the decision, adding that it “sends a message that sexual harassment and inappropriate activities in the workplace will not be condoned, and they are unacceptable.” "Most disappointingly, the letter of resignation from yesterday shows no remorse,” Murr said. “It contains no apology to those involved or to any of you."Investigators said they did not have sufficient evidence to determine whether Slaton committed sexual assault under the state’s penal code. Murr did not respond to requests for comment on whether the panel forwarded the matter to law enforcement authorities.
