“If you look at the indicators for this year, one of the economic well-being indicators stayed the same, that was poverty,” Boissiere said. “The poverty rate stayed the same in spite of the fact that many families are having a hard time securing employment. That could possibly be because of policies such as the child tax credit that gave additional funding to families and allowed them to sort of weather the pandemic storm.
But not only do individual children and families stand to benefit from buttressing of U.S. childcare infrastructure, Boissiere said. The country's economy writ large is need of more of it. “Whether it's by supporting municipal entities or in other ways, the state needs to really put forward significant investments in improving access to child care,” Rayo-Garza said. “This session, we’re tracking a lot of bills as they relate to Kids Count, but there was no bill that solely focused on this particular issue that made it through."
