Soon after the 34-count indictment against former President Donald Trump was unsealed, his staunchest supporters in the Lone Star State dismissed those charges as a trumped-up political hatchet job.
The Manhattan district attorney is accusing Trump of falsifying business records to conceal potentially damaging information about Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. Every Republican member of Congress who commented Tuesday on the charges criticized them. The revelations did little to sway some Texas Republicans.
In a news conference after Trump’s arraignment, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said “serious criminal conduct” cannot be “normalized.” Trump also faces other investigations involving his conduct after the 2020 election and his possession of classified documents long after he left the White House. Those cases have been seen as more significant than the Manhattan DA's case. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, said the Manhattan case should not be understated.
“May some justice finally be served for the Grifter in Chief, and may all the people harmed, disrespected, and misrepresented by his time in office feel some semblance of accountability,” Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, said in a statement.
