For nearly eight years, the former U.S. Army artillery specialist and San Antonio resident, Alejandro Esparza, has applied for federal aid regarding lung issues from burn pits and is among the 70% of veterans that have been denied.

SAN ANTONIO — Former U.S. Army artillery specialist, Alejandro Esparza, still uses the lessons he learned with his own battalion.

Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Esparza was exposed to toxins from burn pits and has suffered long-term breathing issues. "I think they [toxic chemicals] are causing long-term respiratory illnesses and I hope we get help,” Esparza said. For thousands of veterans exposed to toxins in the line of duty, the question is, how much longer will they have to wait?
