An investigation by NJ Advance Media found 370 legal settlements across New Jersey police departments since 2019 involving allegations of misconduct. Of those 16 settlements involving 13 police departments were for at least $1 million.
Seven Princeton police officers sued their department in 2013, charging their former police chief had for years subjected them to crude sexual, sexist and homophobic harassment, and threatened to ruin their careers if they ever spoke out.
Matthew Peluso, the attorney for the seven officers, called the toxic workplace allegations among the worst he has seen in a career spanning more than 20 years.Dudeck, a cop for three decades, was placed on paid leave by Princeton as the accusations came to light, and he later retired with a pension worth nearly $129,000 a year.Princeton Mayor Mark Freda and current police Chief Jon Bucchere did not respond to a request for comment. A letter sent to Dudeck’s home went unanswered.
Neither White’s death nor the county’s $3 million settlement with his estate have previously been reported. The agreement, signed in March 2021, was reached without the filing of a lawsuit, which would have brought the case into the public eye.
