Week 1 of the college football season is filled with many one-sided scores, and the Top-25 teams did not disappoint. However, in the two games involving Top-25 teams, close contests ended in incredible point-spread changing defeats for Oregon & Northwestern bettors. Breaking down the 'bad beats.'

Share to twitterOregon quarterback Justin Herbert looks to throw against Auburn during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, in Arlington, Texas. A pair of improbable last-second touchdowns for Stanford and Auburn caused quite a stir at the sportsbooks on Saturday. Bettors on Northwestern and Oregon were left in disbelief following the gut-wrenching defeats against the spread .

As expected, Auburn's defensive front was strong in limiting Oregon to just 90 yards rushing on 33 attempts. But Ducks senior QB Justin Herbert was solid passing for 242 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions against excellent man coverage by the Tigers. The Ducks scored on their next possession on a three play 75-yard drive with Herbert's touchdown pass putting the Ducks up 14-3 at the end of the first quarter with 176 yards total offense in the opening quarter for Oregon. The Ducks intercepted QB Nix on Auburn's next possession, and then after an Auburn punt on the Tigers following possession, Javon Holland returned the punt 81 yards to setup first and goal for the Ducks leading 14-3.

Without a timeout remaining and trailing 21-20, it seemed Auburn might spike the ball, run a draw or a short pass to pick up more yards and then spike the ball to attempt the game-winning field goal. But instead, they took one shot and pass towards the end zone, and desperation was answered with a touchdown to send Tigers fans into a frenzy at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and Auburn bettors into bedlam as well after the Tigers and bettors were buried most the game.

Stanford's defense was stout, and the Cardinal lost their starting quarterback TJ Costello to a head injury very late in the first half leading 10-0. Costello finished 16-of-20 for 152 yards and a touchdown before David Mills took over, fumbled, and finished the game 7-of-14 for 81 yards. Mills' fumble allowed Northwestern a chance taking over at the Stanford 20. But the Wildcats sputtered again and then missed a field goal.
