“Can I claim my dog as a dependent on my taxes?” Some New Yorkers have used the city’s 311 service to lodge unusual complaints and questions.
Give a New Yorker free rein to complain and this is what you get: “I’d like to file a noise complaint against my refrigerator.”
The request from someone annoyed by the appliance was just one of the many odd calls made to New York City’s 311 service since its inception in 2003. Officials created the line for mundane complaints, like too-loud construction or heating problems, but bizarre calls trickled in, too. On Friday, the city released some of the wildest ones to mark the service’s 20th anniversary.
