The 911 will be Porsche's last combustion-powered car.
concept revealed back in 2022 previewed Porsche's use of the PPE platform. That makes sense, as Dums further explained that an electrified variant of the 718 lineup will follow shortly after the Macan, with an electric Cayenne also in the works. The 911 will follow a different path forward:
"Our strategy in the first place is switching to electric mobility and ... we will produce the 911 as long as possible with a combustion engine," said Dums. This marks the first time that Porsche has explicitly stated its intentions to have only one internal combustion-powered vehicle in its lineup. It should come as no surprise that the 911 would be the vehicle to receive that honor, as the car remains the centerpiece of Stuttgart’s business.
The brand’s investment into e-fuel development has also left many hoping to see more internal-combustion Porsche products deep into the future. According to Dums, the e-fuel investments withand the brand’s electrician goals are not explicitly related. HIF Global is predominantly focused on aviation and heavy-duty vehicle fuels, with Dums noting that Porsche believes passenger cars will ultimately become fully electrified.
Porsche’s engineers are pretty good at building engines. One only needs to listen to a GT3 pull through the rev range to get that understanding. If only one of the brand's cars gets to keep making that music, we're glad it's the 911. We'll just have to see how long the automaker is actually able to fend off regulators.Born and raised in Metro Detroit, associate editor Lucas Bell has spent his entire life surrounded by the automotive industry.
