Then-candidate for Alaska House Marilyn Stewart is interviewed on Nov. 8, 2016. Stewart, the former executive director of the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, says she was fired from that job as the result of discrimination. The former executive director of the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, which investigates complaints of discrimination, saysThat’s according to Marilyn Stewart’s lawsuit against the commission, filed in late October.
Stewart had worked as director of Anchorage’s Office of Equal Opportunity and ran as a Republican for a state House seat in 2018. She didn’t win but briefly went to work in Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s office before she was hired as the human rights commission’s director. What followed, according to the lawsuit, was a tense meeting with the commissioners about two weeks later.
After the meeting, Stewart complained to Dunleavy’s office, but a deputy chief of staff told her the governor’s office wanted her to try to continue working with her, the lawsuit says. Stewart’s lawsuit is asking to have her reinstated as the commission’s executive director, as well as compensatory damages for pay she says she would’ve gotten if she hadn’t been fired and punitive damages to punish the commission.
