Through their attempts to double dip on the satisfaction of seeing Hannah dump Luke P., TheBachelorette showrunners proved they never understood what made that moment so exhilarating in the first place
tried to frame Luke’s return as a shocking twist—but savvy viewers know that Parker could never have slipped back onto the show without assistance or at least clearance from production. We were meant to laugh and cheer as Hannah repeatedly demanded to know why Luke was there; as she walked around him in a failed attempt to pretend he wasn’t; and as he refused to go, like a classic TV bonehead.
Throughout his time on Hannah’s season, Luke came off as a menace. He shouted down and physically threatened his fellow contestants in the mansion; he gaslit Hannah and outright lied to her face; he talked with his eyebrows in a way that could annoy nearly anyone to death.
Yes, there’s something to be said for subverting Luke’s self image as a macho dreamboat by making him plead for forgiveness—but Hannah did that herself last week. By allowing or facilitating Luke’s return, the series undermined her decision. Monday’s reunion should have been about reveling in petty rivalries, reviving lame recurring jokes, and letting Chris Harrison force us all to watch a blooper reel.
Perhaps some viewers found joy in watching Luke get roasted for two straight hours, but truthfully, I longed for the corniness that usually characterizes these evenings—even the Halo Top sponcon. Anything would have been better than listening to a guy known for his insincerity yammer around his shortcomings for what felt like a thousand lifetimes before eventually, finally, apologizing: “I just want to tell you one thing,” Luke said. “I’m sorry. That’s it. I made it really hard on her.
In the end, Hannah wrapped up her reunion by facetiously apologizing to all of Bachelor Nation: “I’m sorry for this whole thing with Luke, and him just being on our television screens for so long,” she said. “Way longer than really any one of us ever desired. It’s my fault—a lot his, but I did it. I was there. I’m sorry.... The Luke P. show is canceled.” One might wonder when production will apologize for its own role in the tedium, but we’re not holding our breath.
