I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a vague anti-abortion bent to the film’s arguments. Was that just some of the characters talking, and not Kore-eda himself? I’ll have to give the film another watch to suss that out.
, stages a town hall sequence in which the residents of a small Romanian village essentially speak the movie’s thesis for the director, perhaps because he felt there was no time for metaphor. Other tempers were softened, more concerned with simple human connection than making the big point. Directorto the gentler love story of—still a political film about hardscrabble living, certainly, but with a touch of romantic fairytale to it.and told us a story about love and time., a far cry from the blood and fire of a ruined future-Earth.
Masks were hardly seen around Cannes during the festival. Gone were the tents full of people taking COVID tests every two days. Parties were back in force, thumping away on the beach like the old days. And yet Cannes still seemed affected by the pandemic, just in less obvious terms.
The festival was muscling itself back into the world last year, whereas in 2022, it was just doing the more granular, less sensational work of maintaining its footing . Though the titles were grand—
