The American bumblebee was once the most commonly observed bumblebee in the U.S., but its population has plummeted. Efforts are under way to save the biologically important species.
Bumblebees are a critical part of the American landscape. Carrying pollen from plant to plant, they are important to the growth of commercial crops and wildflowers.Threatened by pesticides, development and climate change, 12 of those species are in decline and classified as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The Center for Biological Diversity has filed a petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the bee.
