A new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that girls who play soccer are at nearly the same risk for traumatic brain injuries as boys who play football.

that because the girls’ sports are considered less risky, schools may provide less sideline care for girls’ sports than for the male-dominated sports which are considered higher risk. Without the expertise of an athletic trainer at the time of the injury, the girls may take longer to realize they sustained a concussion.

Yet another difference is that in many boys’ sports the contact is legal, so boys who play high-contact sports are often taught how to take a hit to minimize the impact. In football, ice hockey and lacrosse where checking and tackling are a big part of the game, learning to take and avoid hits is a part of the coaching instruction. In girls’ sports, contact is generally not legal.

One final difference between the girls’ and boys’ sports is the boys’ high school sports that are most concussion-prone enforce the use of helmets. The top three head injury-prone sports for boys, football, ice hockey and lacrosse, all require headgear. The top three concussion-prone sports for girls, soccer, basketball and lacrosse do not require any protective headgear.
