New research finds that blaming sexual harassment victims is linked to empathy for male perpetrators:

In the first study, participants were asked to read a fictional account of a female college student’s allegations of sexual harassment against a male student. In the the narrative, a female student described serious and repeated incidences of clear-cut sexual harassment. After reading the allegations, participants were questioned about their reactions.
To dig deeper, the researchers repeated the experiment, but this time after reading, the participants were asked to write a paragraph from the fictional male or female student’s perspective. Participants who took the perspective of the male student who was accused of sexual harassment were more likely to blame the victim. Why? Once again, they were more likely to empathize with the perpetrator.
Lead author, Renata Bongiorno says she knows of no other research that focused on the negative aspects of empathy."Most research focuses on the presumed benefits of empathy and the problems caused by lacking empathy," she says. This study has real world implications for reducing victim blame in cases of sexual harassment. Instead of encouraging men to increase their empathy toward women, the researchers suggest that we should instead be focused on reducing empathy for male perpetrators.
