More than a third of the survey respondents said they intended to leave their current companies within the next two years, and black professionals are three times more likely to start their own business ventures than their white counterparts. Authenticity has become a corporate buzzword in recent years, with company leaders harping on the importance of bringing one’s full self to work. Black professionals find this to be a challenge. A number of respondents said that they had to code-switch—changing how they express themselves when they are among people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds—or cover or downplay aspects of their identity at work.
