Opinion: The effort to stop students studying how big lies are spread
At the university where I work with college journalism students, the main issues for the young people, 50 years after I matriculated in a still-intense but somewhat more devil-may-care time, are the classic current ones at our elite schools: the pressure to succeed, now and in preparing for their futures.
What a fine, important question to ask young people, on the verge. Plenty of time for worry about the damn curve. For Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, when he’s not, uh, wrestling with other weighty, sweaty matters, the most important matter to tackle in American academia is apparently making sure our universities stop researching just why the widespread dissemination of misinformation — literally, lies — has become such a big business in our national politics.
Jordan and his equally nutball colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee want to put a stop to professors, and their students, looking into how lies get spread and how to tell the truth instead, and they want to stop them pronto, what with an important presidential election coming up and all. One of the academic outfits the shirtsleeved wacko is going after is the Stanford Internet Observatory, which, from the belly of the internet beast, studies how political lies are spread on social media. It’s not just the dastardly profs he’s after — his committee has literally subpoenaed undergrads’ email accounts to pry into what they are saying to each other and their teachers about … how to stop the spread of lies.
