The fastest 5G network has been revealed—and it's not your first guess
You’ll know Ookla best from its brilliant Speedtest app which shows you just how fast your wi-fi or cellular connection is. It’s always an eye-opener usually because it remind you that you often don’t get your broadband supplier’s headline speeds over a wireless connection, even if you’re sitting right next to the router, for the love of Pete.
But it’s also a company devoted to network intelligence and it’s been looking at which network has offered the fastest 5G speeds. In the Q1-Q2 period this year, the fastest speeds have been recorded on the youngest of the four UK networks: Three. Three was not the first to launch its 5G network, so the fact that it has delivered the fastest speeds in London, Manchester and Birmingham isn’t down to having been doing it for longer.
But it may not be that surprising. Three launched in 2003 with the UK’s first 3G network and it’s always been about data, that element which has become more important with each successive generation of connectivity. Three says that in February this year, the average data usage per customer was 17GB per month and the all-time data peak came in May during a Champions League soccer game between Manchester City and PSG. Three says its average customer uses 3.
