The FBI's ex-CIO, Gordon Bitko, made it his mission to pit big data against bad guys
In the hunt for criminals and terrorists, electronic information is often key to cracking cases. But the massive amounts of data generated by all kinds of digital devices has made it harder for law-enforcement agencies to spot vital clues.
To deal with big investigations, the FBI has resorted to bringing in armies of agents and analysts to comb through videos, audio records and other data sources. After the Las Vegas shooting, it had multiple teams working round the clock for weeks sifting through video footage trying to establish the movements of the gunman in the period leading up to the atrocity. That pulled resources away from other cases.
Moving operations to the cloud has helped the FBI become more agile. One example: The agency’s counterterrorism division was able to roll out a new system on Amazon Web Services in a few months to review refugees for potential security risks. Bitko says that under the previous in-house setup, developing and deploying the tech would have taken several years.
Some of this work took place during a turbulent time at the FBI. In May 2017 President Donald Trump fired Comey, replacing him with Christopher Wray, who was sworn into office in August of the same year. But backing from the top for Bitko’s digital transformation plan never wavered. “Director Comey and Director Wray were both advocates for that,” he says. “I always felt supported.”
