Who better to help establish the perfect summer date style than ever-effortless Parisiennes?

Few things beat a great summer date. Be it with your future life partner or merely a fleeting romantic interest, there is something incomparable about that long, breezy, post-dinner stroll through still-warm city streets, feeling like the protagonist of your own indie film. Granted, no nirvana is complete without the perfect outfit, which is where things get tricky, at least for me.

With effortlessness being the ethos of summer, even the most innocent attempt toward allure—such as a black liner, or a heel—feels unnatural in our global warming–induced heat. And yet it’s not like I can allow my inner romantic ingenue to show up to a date in my usual summer uniform of denim cutoffs . This inner turmoil leads me to believe that summertime date dressing abides by a completely separate sartorial code, one that I have yet to master.

Always pros at setting a scene, my Parisian friends start by debunking my banale “dinner and a walk” agenda, emphasizing that summertime dates can abide by far more diverse scripts. “It’s usually in the summer that we realize we live in the most beautiful city of the world,” says Stéphanie Delpon, the cofounder of Parisian creative agency Pictoresq, who likes to take advantage of the city with a day-to-night adventure that reads like a scene from a Julie Delpy film.

Native Parisienne and Sonia Rykiel PR director Lola Rykiel finds summer romance to be a “continuity of the French lifestyle,” with its strong terrace culture and penchant for taking in every ray of sunlight. While she loves the occasional impromptu date activity, such as a boat outing or an explorative bike ride , her real soft spot is a classic Parisian terrace rendezvous, accompanied by a glass of rosé and some cheese and olives, followed by a walk along the Seine.

For many Parisians, summer dating doubles as a perfect opportunity to get out of one’s comfort zone and explore their city for the gastronomical haven that it is. Lauriane Gepner, founder of Dojo, an app that offers a curated guide of the best places to eat, drink, and go out in the city, boasts a little black book of up-and-coming foodie spots.
