The future of sustainability for the industries that power online shopping, explained paid Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
While growth has decelerated a bit in recent times, e-commerce shopping was reportedly still on the rise in 2018, generating nearly $3 trillion worldwide, most noticeably in China and the United States. The challenges many brick-and-mortar retailers face as they weather the disruption of e-commerce is well-documented. However, the impact of e-commerce surges even higher up the supply chain, affecting companies from prototype to final delivery.
"A lot of materials handling – especially warehousing – is done inside where combustion engines are clearly no longer acceptable in a healthy working environment due to the emissions, so almost by definition it is going towards electric,” Seijger explains. “But the performance, the power and endurance of the equipment has improved tremendously in the last few years. It may not seem like that when you look at a forklift truck from outside, but the inside is now completely different.
As a result, sophisticated algorithms backed by real-world data models help to optimize equipment performance in the warehouse. These algorithms create energy efficient movements with fewer wasted journeys, therefore lessening the machinery’s impact on the planet – and the business’ bottom line.EDiA EM three-wheel electric forklift
But these changes cannot just be efficient – they also need to be user-friendly and comfortable for the employees operating the forklift trucks. Among the questions Seijger and his colleagues ask themselves in their work: “Does the truck respond intuitively to the input of the driver, or does it feel artificial? Is it nice to drive, or rough around the edge?”
