I'm not sure they thought this through.
The GOP has gone all in on the debt ceiling. Raising the ceiling three times under Trump was apparently the last straw.
McCarthy has a razor-thin majority and was only able to cobble together a coalition of support for his speakership by making ridiculous promises to ridiculous people. McCarthy and the rest of his “moderate” caucus are now beholden to zealots who don’t necessarily see a U.S. default as a bad thing.
