Union Pacific says that train robberies around downtown L.A. are up 160% since December, 2020. During the past few months, around 90 train containers have been broken into each day.

At night, through binoculars, he often watches thieves break into the stalled boxcars. “There will be, like, twenty people, up and down,” he said. “There’s a girl I know who runs a crew of five. She’s rough as steel, calluses from climbing the rope.” He pointed to a cut in the fence. “I see them go through the hole. Even if they put barbed wire around it, people cut into it.
