In Dowd’s eyes, the woman once known as Lydia Clemons never fully dealt with the shame and strictness of her own upbringing—and in this week’s episode, she said, we’re seeing what happened when Lydia’s unprocessed pain finally broke loose. “Do you know what happened in the shooting of this episode?” she said. “I’ll tell you the honest truth: It broke my heart for her, and it made me just straight-up stop—and not just once.
The details of Aunt Lydia’s early life remain, mostly, an enigma. According to Dowd, Aunt Lydia’s mother may not have been a presence in her life—due to death, or something else. Lydia was therefore “heavily influenced by the father—so,” she said.
