“I think the show in general is many things, but to me, it’s an invitation to the freedom of queerness and the expansiveness of drag as an art form in a natural setting,” Syzygy said over the phone. “It touches on the Shakespeare quote of ‘all the world’s a stage.’ There’s something magical about people walking along a beach and stumbling on a drag show. It exposes people who might not otherwise go to a queer bar or drag event.
Golden Hour primarily stages performances at the Sand Ladder on Fridays or Lobos Creek on Saturdays and Sundays, but it has also held them in caves and at the. Syzygy is in the process of applying for a grant with the San Francisco Parks Alliance to expand the shows to other locations. Whether a hundred people or just a handful come out, the effect is the same, they said, describing Golden Hour as an ephemeral, spiritual and celebratory experience that unfolds at the most nonbinary time of day.
