British explorer Percy Fawcett believed to his dying day that the Amazon jungle was hiding a lost city, but what were his beliefs based on?

British explorer Percy Fawcett was last seen in 1925 embarking on a voyage that would take him to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. After years of working as a surveyor across the region, Fawcett had become convinced that a secret lay in the heart of the jungle, not just a city, but a profound site of human history. Fawcett named this place The City of Z!, we followed Spanish explorers as they traversed the great Amazon basin in search of the fabled city of El Dorado.

Sadly, this is not quite how it went. Fawcett does note finding pottery sherds in his memoirs, but he seems to have been little impressed by them. Archaeologists today are much more impressed by the presence of these artifacts. Recentin the jungle has found that indeed many large settlements with complex earthworks were built throughout the Amazon. Fawcett’s visions, however, were much ‘grander’ then villages with earthwork walls.

But, the rumors of ruins were not the only rumors that inspired Fawcett’s belief in Z. Fawcett also notes that on several occasions he heard tales of “white Indians” to be found living in the Amazon. One informant told him “I’ve seen them myself—people with red hair and blue eyes, like aup this way, and they’ll tell you the same.” Fawcett not only believed that these “white Indians” existed, but that they alone could have been responsible for the City of Z.
