However, any sense of pleasant vacation vibes are undercut in Gyllenhaal’s film by images of decay and unwelcome scourges from the natural world: Rotten, maggot-infested fruit in Leda’s apartment, a buzzing bug on her pillow, a pine cone that hits her on her back, a big worm she finds in Elena’s doll.
At a local movie theater, Leda becomes distraught when a crowd of boys won’t quiet down. She storms out, teary-eyed, when the kids “win.”In "The Lost Daughter," Nina opens up to Leda about motherhood and the trials of being a parent.Nina — played to great effect by Johnson with inky hair, gold hoops and penetrating blue eyes ringed in black liner — longs for escape.
