Last week, the 21-year-old son of a local sheriff’s deputy was arrested and charged with three counts of arson for setting fires at St. Mary Baptist Church on March 26, Greater Union Baptist Church on April 2, and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4. The burnt ruins of St. Mary Baptist Church, one of three that recently burned down in St. Landry Parish, are seen in Port Barre, La., on April 10. The first fire occurred March 26 at St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre, and the second happened April 2 at Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas. On April 4, Mount Pleasant caught fire.
