From Ghana to the NCAA Final Four, San Diego State’s Nathan Mensah is on a mission
Nathan Mensah and San Diego State got started on their postseason run by celebrating a win over Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference tournament final.Mensah keeps pushing forward, no matter what life throws at him. His mother passed away during his last year of high school. He kept going. At San Diego State, a pulmonary embolism prematurely curtailed his sophomore season. He kept going. A chance to go pro one year ago almost caused him to end his college career. He kept going.
“You have to stay in the moment,” Mensah said. “The moment is now. I don’t picture what will happen because I don’t believe in ‘if.’ I believe in ‘When.’”As the Aztecs celebrated their Elite Eight win over Creighton on the court in Louisville, someone handed Mensah a phone with an incoming video call. When Mensah answered, a million-watt grin spread across his face and he started chatting giddily in one of Ghana’s native languages.
Garrett was a couple years younger than Nathan, but the two boys hit it off and Nathan started staying after practices to join in training sessions with Garrett. Mensah shot hoops in the backyard with Garrett and Mark, shared his love of reggae music, and got used to being part of the Jackson household. They got used to his twice-a-day showers and enormous appetite. He consumed four Jimmy Dean croissant sandwiches every morning, then four more before dinner.
