The NBA's so-called referee 'problem' is more a case of manufactured outrage than an actual league crisis.

on how a single refereeing assignment could swing a game or series. TNT’s pregame show for that same series opened with ref conversation before Game 2.

And while most have no trouble grasping that concept at first, it’s curiously difficult to hang onto once your favorite team starts playing. It’s hard to accept that some of those missed calls might hurt your team as they happen; it’s even harder when they seem obvious from your TV angle; it’s even tougher still when they come at big, game-defining moments.

The endpoint is the same: NBA refs are actually really good at this, and there’s no realistic path to improve them meaningfully. When you get them right at a mid-90s rate, there isn’t a whole lot of room to get better. , namely players, coaches and secondarily the league itself, for the creation of – and failure to properly head off – this brewing issue? A reasonable person doesn’t find this a tough choice.the refs, curiously enough – is a form of what psychologists would call “behavioral confirmation.”

And lo and behold: People who originally planned to care for their children at home put much more stock and legitimacy into the study supporting home care; people originally planning to use daycare were far more convinced by the study supporting daycare. These results were found even though this latter group originallyWhy? Because it’s what they wanted to be true.

And you know what? If your team just got eliminated and it makes you feel better, go for it. There are far worse things in life than some harmless misplaced anger muttered under your breath at a television screen. Go ahead and be a fan.
