The Notebook's Present-Day Timeline Is Set In 2004 The Notebook’s present-day timeline is set in 2004 — 64 years after the first flashback. The audience does not know that this is an older Noah and Allie at first. Noah uses the pseudonym “Duke” as it is revealed Allie is suffering from dementia and does not know who he is. Allie wrote their story in the notebook at the start of her illness and Noah reads it to her daily, using the pseudonym to not scare her.
