The Oscars may look different in 2021
Nominated films are selected by members of the sound branch, but the winners are voted on by the entire Academy—hence, Academy members who don’t know the difference between mixing and editing and fail to give both categories the nuanced consideration they deserve.
The governors said they were initially asked by the Academy board to consider this consolidation three years ago. The issue was brought up again last year. “Please understand, this is not a directive from the Academy but simply a request to review at this time,” the governors write. “Any potential change would not go into effect until the 2021 Oscars.”
