Hulu's The Other Black Girl may keep Nella's boss Vera and CEO Richard Wagner similar to their on-the-page counterparts, but the TV series highlights the shallow sensibilities of a post-2020 world.
4 Shani’s Role Changes From Book To Screen In Harris' novel, there's a well-organized group called The Resistance that features several prominent characters, including Shani . In the show, however, Shani is on the run and more of an independent operator. Since Harris and her co-writers didn't have the space to translate The Resistance to the screen in the same way, they used Shani's mysterious character as a stand-in for the organization at large.
