But in a much larger number of countries , there was at least one instance of religious groups or leaders promoting public health measures in various ways, such as voluntarily canceling services, encouraging people to stay at home, organizing online worship, and recommending mask-wearing and social distancing.
In some cases, governments relied on religious authorities to dispel public skepticism about health measures. In, an esteemed Islamic advisory body declared early in the pandemic that it was religiously permissible to stop communal prayers, and the Grand Mufti — the country’s highest Islamic jurist — encouraged Egyptians to follow guidelines on social distancing and hygiene.
