Research shows the perfect amount of friction gives finger snaps their signature pop:
Don’t take your ability to snap your fingers for granted. According to new high-speed footage, our digits contain just the right amount of friction to first store, and then rapidly release, energy. Any more or less, and we’d barely make a sound.
Researchers used a high-speed camera to record a hand executing a snap, placing small circles of reflective tape on each joint to carefully track each finger’s movement. They also recorded snap times when fingers were covered in various materials, such as thimbles, latex gloves, or lotion, to study the role of friction. In a separate set of tests, they placed sensors between the thumb and middle finger to determine how much force their test subjects used for each snap.
Other materials make the motion significantly less snappy: Thimble-covered fingers produced snaps that were 3.4 times slower, and lotion made the snap four times slower. In the first case, there was too much friction, so the energy dissipated. In the second, there was too little friction and not enough time for energy to be stored up. Bare hands had the best mix of compression and friction to maximize speed, producing the shock waves that give the motion its signature pop.
