by sharing a bittersweet memory of the happy ending he envisioned as a young, aspiring singer sharing a stage and spotlight with his kid brother Mark.
What emerges is a life-affirming story of recovery and redemption that doesn't sugar-coat the pain an addict's struggles tend to cause the other people in their lives. Esparza didn't know much about the band before Dave Hilker and Jeff Freundlich approached him with the concept in 2018. "I think it was cathartic for him," he says."And Lawrence understood and accepted that the consequences of his actions and some of his personality traits that at some times weren't necessarily favorable were gonna be exposed.""I think that's what makes the documentary so powerful," Freundlich says."You're getting these multiple viewpoints."
"They were guys that my whole band could look at and think 'We're all on the frontlines together, trying to do this thing.'" Hopkins is also a haunting reminder of how things could have gone for Lawrence if he hadn't turned his life around. Freundlich says he hopes the documentary will help some viewers dealing with addiction in their own lives.
The final scenes of Lawrence walking with a cane and giving what was destined to be his last performance alone on acoustic guitar in his home, were shot about a month before his death.
