There's no recapturing the lost magic of the old Supras, so think of this latest special edition as a tribute car.
45th Anniversary Edition leans into that heritage by paying homage to nearly half a century of the iconic Supra. Nostalgia is a tricky thing. It gives us the tendency to build things up in our minds, and, therefore, makes them nearly impossible to recreate. The new 45th Anniversary Edition does not attempt to recapture the lost magic of the legendary Supras of yore—especially the MkIV Supra—but it nonetheless wears some cool details.
When it launched in 1979, it used a 2.6-liter, 110-hp inline-six mated to either a manual or automatic transmission. After a year, that setup was upgraded to a 2.8-liter engine, and the fixed-axle rear suspension was replaced by a semi-trailing arm and coil spring setup. Navicom was a microchip-based system that told you the distance and direction to a set destination in real time, a precursor to today's navigation systems.In 1986, Toyota lost the Celica name and thus the Supra became its own sports car. The A70 had a redesigned body with low drag and launched with a 24-valve, 3.0-liter 7M-GE straight-six that produced 200 hp and 196 lb-ft of torque.
