YOKOHAMA, Japan—At 7:30 a.m. on Joe Ryan’s first day in Japan, the Team USA pitcher was still getting acclimated to everything about these strange Olympics when he sat down for breakfast in the Athletes Village with his teammates. Soon he had to deal with something far more unusual.He sat down for breakfast as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. He got up as a Minnesota Twin.
“It’s kind of weird,” Ryan says. “Going back is definitely going to be different than I had anticipated.” What’s weirder is that he’s not even alone in this odd situation. A week later, fellow Team USA pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson was also traded—from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Twins, who managed to acquire two Olympians in a matter of days.
