U.S. men’s runners are used to flourishing on the Olympic track. In Tokyo, they’re in danger of failing to win a single gold.

TOKYO—The U.S. men’s track team’s afternoon started with getting chewed out by American track legend Carl Lewis on Twitter. Its day ended with two U.S. hopefuls missing the podium in the men’s 400 meters.

The episodes were the latest chapters in what has become a grim story for Team USA here. On the track, the U.S. men are in danger of failing to win a running-event gold medal for the first time in the modern Olympic Games, which began in 1896. The American men’s problems are numerous. Some runners inexplicably slowed from their times just weeks or months ago. One defending world champion didn’t qualify for the Games. And the 4×100-meter relay team melted down, continuing the confounding mishaps that have dogged the U.S. in the event for years., whose 10 Olympic medals in sprints and long jump include nine golds.

“The USA team did everything wrong in the men’s relay,” he wrote. “The passing system is wrong, athletes running the wrong legs, and it was clear that there was no leadership. It was a total embarrassment, and completely unacceptable for a USA team to look worse than the AAU kids I saw.”
