The uneven bars being used by the Tokyo Olympics are springier than the bars that many gymnasts are used to
TOKYO—For two-and-a-half years, the most coveted item of gymnastics equipment in the world was a set of unusually springy uneven bars.
They were expensive. They were hard to get outside of Japan. And they could make or break a country’s medal hopes because they were going to be used at theThe apparatus in question generated an unexpected result in the uneven bars individual competition on Sunday. They didn’t generate a second gold medal for Sunisa Lee, the 18-year-old American who became the Olympic all-around champion Thursday.
The bars final had been anticipated as a factor in a closely-fought contest. Instead, Lee struggled to make all the difficult connecting release moves that she had in qualifications or the all-around, while Nina Derwael of Belgium took gold far ahead of Lee and silver medalist Anastasiia Iliankova of ROC.
Gymnasts blamed the absence of a short warm-up on the equipment just before performing, of the kind that gymnasts get in team and all-around finals. It was clear, they said, that athletes were coming in cold and some of their performances were suffering.
