The unfair treatment of Away co-founder and CEO Steph Korey, the most recent CEO to relinquish her title
According to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a record number of CEOs—1,480—have left their posts. The CEOs of McDonald’s, Under Armour, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, SoulCycle, Nike, Google, Alibaba, Wework and many others were either forced out or have stepped down from their roles .
If a male boss had said the same thing, it wouldn’t make news at all. People would applaud his strong devotion to his customers and his meticulous care about the integrity of the product offered.The employees that were interviewed all claim that they were drawn to the company because they loved Away’s aspirational feel. They were enamored with the celebrities that endorsed the product on Instagram. Prospective employees felt a connection to the luxury-travel aspect associated with the brand.
It's as if they were offered a job working at Downton Abbey and then became angry and resentful that they actually had to do the chores attendant with being hired as a maid or butler. They thought that they would be the lords and ladies of the manner. Sadly, entry-level jobs based in New York City don’t work like that. Two young women were the cofounders of Away and required to run a fast-growing business. Away raised roughly $180 million from top-tier investors and venture capitalists.
Away hired a new CEO, Stuart Haselden, who was previously an executive at Lululemon. Korey is giving up her daily control of the company, but will keep her seat on the company’s board of directors and have the title of executive chairman.
