Organizing, but make it fashion!
Amazon’s leadership had initiallyracist and classist dog whistles to discredit Smalls based on his appearance and vernacular. But the company's strategy proved ineffective; both the media and the broader public seem to have embraced Smalls and his distinct flair. The elitism aimed at blue-collar workers might manifest differently depending on race, but workers recognize it as a reductive cheap shot all the same.
See: the photo of Smalls from the union’s post-vote count press conference, posted by the Twitter account, going viral. Days after the ALU won its vote, the page was started by Bay Area resident John Elward to share photos of today’s rank-and-file workers wearing pro-worker gear, alongside images of past labor leaders in vintage union outfits.
“The older pictures of early labor leaders and the things that they're wearing — there's this sense of dignity and pride, a little bit, or respect,” the 41-year-old UPS worker tells“And I think that's a lot of what the ‘drip’ is really about — dignity and respect in the workplace and letting somebody feel like they have a place in society. Because, you know, corporate America and the workplace just wants to chew you up and spit you out.
Elward has been a rank-and-file member of the Teamsters for 18 years. His grandfather, a Teamster UPS driver before him, also served as the president of his San Francisco local in the 1950s. Elward calls himself an “incredibly active” member of his own local, tellingthat he might end up leaving UPS for a full-time job working for the union someday. Fascinated by labor history, he collects union gear in his free time — whatever notable hats, buttons, shirts, and jackets he can get his hands on.
, there was a day that I couldn't be there where they were doing a march, and she showed up wearing my Teamsters jacket and marched with some of my friends.
