TheWhale's Hong Chau shares some candid thoughts on her Oscar nomination in reflecting on the infamous flop, Downsizing. 'I said to myself, ‘I don’t ever want to go through this again’... when people ask how it feels to be nominated, it’s strange.'
Despite scoring acclaim in the prior film, The Whale star Hong Chau is sharing some candid thoughts on her Oscar nomination following the infamous box office flop, Downsizing. Before starring in Brendan Fraser's comeback film, Chau finally gained some traction in the acting world with her role in the Matt Damon-led Downsizing as Vietnamese political dissident Ngoc Lan Tran.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with The Independent, Hong Chau reflected on her Oscar nomination for The Whale and her feelings towards it. The star admitted to feeling strangely, especially when comparing it to what many thought would be her breakout project, the sci-fi dramedy Downsizing, which she shared some candid thoughts about its infamous box office flop.
I said to myself, ‘I don’t ever want to go through this again’. So now, when people ask how it feels to be nominated, it’s strange. I really feel nothing. If I can be completely honest, it’s more like, ‘Oh dear’.
Chau would come back from a break during the COVID-19 pandemic in full force, starring in The Whale, for which she's up for an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She would also co-star in the dark comedy horror-thriller The Menu, which became a sleeper hit at the box office and a viral sensation following its HBO Max premiere, with audiences spotlighting Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult's committed performances.
With her getting an Oscar nod for her turn in The Whale, Chau's rise to stardom is nowhere near slowing down heading into 2023. She's already set for roles in Rian Johnson's acclaimed Peacock mystery series Poker Face, as well as Wes Anderson's romantic dramedy Asteroid City, which is slated for a June 16 release.
