Minnie Driver defends Henry Cavill's Witcher recasting. 'We come from this tradition of Doctor Who where the Doctor regenerates. I think we need to look at it far more like it’s amazing. It’s an amazing person, it’s an amazing character.'
The Witcher's impending recasting of lead character Geralt of Rivia has been defended by Minnie Driver, one of the stars of the series' spinoff The Witcher: Blood Origin. The Witcher, which premiered on Netflix in December 2019, is based on the series of fantasy novels of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which have also been adapted into a popular video game series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Entertainment Weekly sat down for an interview with Driver ahead of the release of The Witcher: Blood Origin. During their conversation, the topic naturally turned to the controversial recasting, which Driver defended. She compared the character being taken over by Hemsworth to the way that the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who frequently recasts its lead, saying that "it’s an amazing character, and we should have different people playing it.
We come from this tradition of Doctor Who where the Doctor regenerates. I think we need to look at it far more like it’s amazing. It’s an amazing person, it’s an amazing character, and we should have different people playing it.Why Fans Are Upset About The Witcher's Recasting There are several reasons that audiences felt particularly scandalized by the announcement that Liam Hemsworth would be playing Geralt.
Another reason that fans are disappointed is the fact that Cavill himself has become beloved in the role. The only solace that many fans were taking in his departure was the presumption that he was leaving the series in order to return to the DC Universe as Superman, which was teased by the mid-credits scene of Black Adam and confirmed by the actor himself shortly after the film's release.
Other Famous Roles That Have Been Recast While Driver points out that audiences have accepted the frequent recasting of The Doctor, there is an in-universe explanation for the character's regeneration in Doctor Who, which is a slightly different situation. However, there are other iconic characters who have been played by multiple people throughout their franchises with no explanation, including iconic superspy James Bond and CIA analyst Jack Ryan.
