A growing shortage of nursing educators limits the pipeline of students who can be trained to be nurses.
In Pennsylvania, faculty members teaching required nursing education courses must hold at least one graduate degree in nursing, be currently licensed as a professional nurse, and must have expertise in their areas of instruction. Creating opportunities in academia that allow for more master’s prepared nurses to provide classroom training would grow the small pool of eligible nurses to teach.
Additionally, we must eliminate barriers that have kept people of color from entering the field. We can make a more concerted effort to reach POC where they are – providing education on the field in high schools and recruiting in new communities. Moreover, there is significant room for empowering diverse voices currently in the nursing community who can act as role models for the next generation.
Today, we only bolster the stories of doctors - through media like Grey’s Anatomy, Chicago Med, and ER, yet nurses have an equally profound impact on patients, treating, and advocating for them when faced with medical emergencies.
