‘There’s only so many times you can scroll on your phone’: Searching for lockdown hobbies | smh_andrew
From pottery to piano, learning a language to winter swimming, coronavirus restrictions have given many people the time and motivation to take up new hobbies or return to childhood pastimes.
Searches for pottery equipment and painting supplies were also up during lockdown , although these increases were dwarfed by searches for dumbbells , weights and gym equipment . Dr Allen said hobbies add variety and structure to the day “which is helpful in the monotony of lockdown”. Ms Vitasa’s online beginner’s Korean course runs for 10 weeks, every Monday for two hours a night. She also spends up to two hours on the weekend on homework.
“Last year in lockdown I would spend hours at the piano practising songs I was learning off YouTube,” she said. “I’m not an expert at piano at all, but it has really helped with my mental health and allowed me to relax.”
