that Rhode Island’s failure to implement standards for civics education in some districts violates the 14th Amendment right to equal treatment under the law.Aleita Cook is on the leadership committee of the Providence Student Union and is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuitCook joined the PSU when she was 16 years old, and now works as the chapter coordinator for the union. One campaign she currently oversees is the “credit recovery” program at Central High School.

PSU students are leveraging this power to remove barriers to student learning. Jayson Rodriguez, a junior at Providence’s the Met High School and the PSU leadership team director, has been working on a campaign with PSU, ARISE and PrYSM to replace police officers in the city’s schools with counselors.

Jayson gave a speech at a block party held last year to raise awareness of the campaign. He called the experience “nerve-racking,” but said he knows it’s part of “doing something bigger than myself.” Jayson said the education commissioner has largely focused on test scores as a measure of performance, but has not spoken as much about the conditions in which students are living and learning.
