The cast of Southwest ISD’s production of the musical “Annie Jr.” gathers in a huddle before the show’s dress rehearsal Tuesday. Half of them are kids from across the district who are in special education, the other half act as their mentors.Days before Friday’s opening night and just before Act Two, the half-costumed characters at the Southwest High School auditorium went into an onstage huddle, sitting still but fidgeting with a mix of excitement and nerves.

Dickerson has directed elementary students in theater productions before. But not like this: About half of the cast of 29 kids are in the special education program at Southwest Independent School District and have a range of disabilities, physical and learning. The other cast members are student mentors who back them up onstage. The Penguin Project

“This is our job,” Dickerson told the cast during the dress rehearsal Tuesday night, encouraging the students to give it everything they had. After a quick chant the cast members dispersed to finish putting on costumes and mics.
