Brian Piñon and his wife, Christen Harvey, spend all of August and September planning their house of horrors. Then, in early October, they start building. If you'd like a scare, the Haunt on Douglas Avenue is open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Halloween.

Brian Piñon and his wife, Christen Harvey, spend months planning and building their Haunt on Douglas Avenue, the haunted house they open every Halloween in their 2,000-square-foot garage at 722 Douglas Ave. in Elgin.

The Elgin Police Department plans to close his block to accommodate the hundreds of trick-or-treaters who’ll be on Douglas Avenue Monday afternoon. ROPE Officer Edwin Alva will be on hand with his squad car trunk full of candy and there may be some entertainment, Piñon said. Family, friends, local organizations and the Northeast Neighborhood Association of Elgin help pull it off every year. The couple started their haunted house tradition in 2006 when they lived on the west side. It was much smaller and just for friends and neighbors, Piñon said. When they moved to Douglas Avenue, they had no idea the area was such a mecca for trick-or-treaters.

His house was built in the 1880s and its huge garage is not only ideal for the Haunt, but provides excellent storage space, he said. “Occasionally, we park a car in there,” he joked.
